Abstract

The author's impressions about his visit to the Batak tribe of the Samosir island near the lake Toba volcano situated between the Southern and Northern Sumatra are dedicated to the brief anthropological evaluation and the study of ethnographic details of this interesting people by their provenance and today's mode of life. This «island on island» is populated by typical South Asian race with slight Mongol traces. Very hardworking people christianized by the Dutch used to have a cannibal fame. But that cannibalism wasn't a common life procedure, being only the way of execution for the criminals. The Batak breed cattle, do agricultural work and build their homes on stilts, under them live cattle and sentenced to death criminals who, as depicted by the Batak, are turning into real animals suitable for food. The Batak with no doubt present a high interest in terms of anthropological studies and ethnographic data.
