Abstract

Paleolithic “troves”, which are consist of stone tools, are so exceptional thus they are so attractive in case of archaeology and trasology (esp. studying tools, wear and tear on tools etc.). In 2017 archaeologists excavated Pritubinsk 1 site where they found a group of stone tools which are defined as a “trove”. It consists of five end-scrappers (three of them are broken in the handle area), large blades, flakes with retouched, a piece of a chisel-like tool and three flakes. Eight items are made of the dark grey micro-quartz pebble; two scrappers are made of the light micro-quartz. It is supposed that they were carried in a “bag”, made of organic material. It is possible that this group includes scraper with a break off handle from the same stone, found in 2.5 m to the East. Age of Pritubinsk 1 site must be later then the age of the bones (18 006–17 235 cal BP), which were founded lower than the “trove”. To define the origin of the traces on the micro-quartz surfaces, we have carried out a limited series of experiments involving scraping of various materials by chisels in handle area. To imitate nonpractice wear and tear, five flakes were carried out in the soft leather bag. Trasological study revealed traces of scraping, supplemented by traces of cutting and shaping on six subjects, as well as traces of transportation, which indicate that cores, blanks and tools were carried all together. There are numerous of standard scrappers for making fell. The tool that was made as a burin with the retouch on the skew was not used up. The traces of shaping on the piece of flake cannot be referred to any typological characteristic. Two flakes do not have any traces of using-up also. Probably, a piece of cutting-like tool was unsuitable for further usage. We can assume that most of items were made of flakes. The flakes were striking from two different stone cores. Probably, those flakes were carried in two “bowls” and they have some traces on the front side. Probably "trove" was brought from another place and belonged to one person or the group of people. Its location in the layer, existence of a so-called "fallen" object (?), suggests that it was not hidden, but rather lost or abandoned. Thus, trasological research of the stone tools helps to define the purpose of each tool and also reveal the “history” of each item.
