Abstract

In modern Russian practice of studying of the rock art objects, major changes are occurring associated with the extensive development of methods of contactless fixation. The proposed paper presents main results and the methods of fixing the “painted images” of the Bronze Age using as an example the new object Syrzha in Western Transbaikalia. Rock paintings of this object belong to the so-called Selenga group of Bronze Age petroglyphs. Petroglyphs documentation, taking into account the descriptive standard, developed on the international practice allows organizing and preparing information for the database. To achieve objectivity in the description of the color characteristics, is used the Munsell Rock Color Chart atlas with color shade indexing through alphanumeric code. One of the new methods of image fixation is a three-dimensional reconstruction, which is created using photogrammetry or laser scanning. Using 3D-reconstruction based on the method of cloud photogrammetry it possible to make a three-dimensional model of the general view of the archaeological object, the entire plane with composition, images and its individual parts. 3D terrain model was shot using the quadcopter DJI Phantom 3 Pro and the GPS receiver Garmin 62s. The following software was used for image processing: Agisoft PhotoScan Pix4Dmapper, Pix4D Capture, Ctrl+DJI (plug-in for Pix4D with DJI); during of the laboratory works, we use the DStretch plug-in of ImageJ for processing photos of planes. The use of the DStretch plug-in for the processing of petroglyphs photos allowed revealing new drawings, their details, which were not noticeable by visual inspection of the rock planes. Such archaeological objects as Syrzha with Bronze Age rock paintings are the sites of cult and ritual activity by the local population. A part of ancient rock art sites, which were recorded more than half a century ago, presently it is already impossible to find, therefore fixing and the description of petroglyphs at qualitatively new level with application of modern methods is relevant scientific research. The use of various methods, including traditional methods of fixing of the archaeological object, and also 3D-modeling, digital photography, image processing using filters provide the most complete and objective fixing procedure, monitoring and preservation of rock art objects.
