Abstract

The report is about consideration of correctness of functional interpretation of a fragment of bone item, stored in the Omsk State Historical Museum (OMK 9675/709, 712). The find was made in 1970, in the course of research of the Final Paleolithic site Chernoozerie 2 (Omsk region, Sargatskii district). In following presentations, it was designated as a “fragment of a diadem”. It’s only known to a narrow circle of specialists and was not involved to research and analogies. The diadem is typologically and functionally concrete object. Fragments of diadems were periodically found at stations and in burials of Paleolithic era. There, only those which have survived in the proper context can be recognized as diadems. There are some examples when the detection of bony hoops, certainly, has been associated with hair and forehead styling, and hood sealing. The first example is the burial of children from Malta, where a hoop was found near the head of one of the children: a thin, narrow rod of mammoth tusk. The second example is the Sungir children's burial, where a flat ring of mammoth tusk was found on the boy's crown. The functionality of both objects is determined by the context of their detection. We can only fix and reflect on some of their metric data for further identification of similar things. It is something rod-like and narrow. These several things sort of "turn off" most of the known finds from the Yansk station, fragments from the Denisova Cave, a product from the Chernoozerie 2 from the list of diadems. In the context of expanding the range of findings interpreted by the diadems, it is necessary to raise the question of the correctness of such conclusions. The given arguments regarding the possible use of the item, to which the fragments from the Chernoozerie 2 belong, offer a different interpretation. This item was not related to the status decoration of the head. Probably, it was used to fix the edges of clothing (“sleeves”, “trouser leg”, “neck”), ensuring their tight fit to the body.
