Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of materials available from 54 locations on the Chivyrkui Bay of Lake Baikal, using archival and published data as well as archaeological collections at the Irkutsk State University. We provide a list (and map) of archaeological sites, along with preliminary dates for these sites. Our discussion focuses on several well-studied archaeological sites (12 habitation sites and 2 possible cemeteries), featuring stratified deposits. Among them, we highlight five multilayered sites, each containing between three and nine cultural layers. In particular, the sites of Katun I and Okunevaya IV serve as reference sites for the creation of a culture-historic periodization of the Middle and Late Holocene not only for the Chivyrkui Bay, but also for the entire eastern shore of Lake Baikal. Materials explored in this paper are ranged from the Middle Neolithic to the Late Iron Age. However, the currently available data also suggest that two sites (Katun II and Monakhovo) may be dated to the Mesolithic, while one collection of lithic tools may be dated to the Paleolithic (Irkana). This evidence requires further examination and additional work. Overall, Chivyrkui Bay represents significant opportunities for future archaeological study.
