Abstract

The article focuses on the results of radiocarbon dating of the 13 burial complexes from Angara and Lena river. They were found in the late 19th – first half of the 20th centuries. These exhibits are stored in the Irkutsk Regional Museum of Local Lore. The study was conducted as part of a joint Russian-Swedish project to study the DNA of ancient populations of the Northern Eurasia. Samples were taken from the central part of the molars. A. P. Okladnikov in the 1950s developed the first periodization for the Neolithic and the Bronze Age cultures. He did this on the burials of the Angara and Lena river basin. Since the 1980s scientists constantly apply the radiocarbon dating method, revised the A. P. Okladnikov scheme and created a new periodization in the early 2000s. Data on the human teeth show stable high values of δ15N and lower values of δ13C. Isotopic values for several samples from the Angara region show increased δ15N values (> +15), this applies to samples No. 1 Cyclodrome, No. 2 Cyclodrome D-1 and No. 4 Glazkovo (Valley of Angara River). New data on one of the most controversial issues in the Archaeology of the Baikal region were obtained. This applies in particular to the “sedentary” or heavily cramped “burials”, first raised by A. P. Okladnikov. This issue caused controversy in the middle 1990s. Obtained results confirmed the age of some burial complexes, which was determined by A. P. Okladnikov on the relative chronology. In addition, the results corrected some chronometric indicators of these complexes in the Angara region and on the Upper Lena. Thus, the series of new radiocarbon determinations that we obtained and the analysis of the content of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes from the paleoanthropological samples of the Angara region and, especially, Upper Lena, supplement the base of radiocarbon determinations. Presented information generally reflects the general heterogeneous radiocarbon chronology of the complexes of the Baikal region, which is associated with the heterogeneous composition of the cultures. This data to judge the degree of intercultural contacts between the population of the Angara and the Upper Lena, and significantly supplement the available data on a number of burial complexes in the western part of Baikal Siberia.
