Abstract
The aim of this article is to introduce into scientific circulation unpublished materials on the Middle Pleistocene deposits of the Igetei section and to generalize all published data on the Middle Pleistocene of Baikal-Yenisei Siberia. Such materials are of great importance not only for geomorphology and climatostratigraphy, but also for archaeology in connection with the search for traces of Paleolithic human's activity and the deciphering of his living conditions in the Middle and Early Pleistocene of the region. The study of sections of loose sediments was carried out using the pedolithological and event-based approaches, which are aimed at studying sediments and soils from the standpoint of stratigraphy and at deciphering traces of various natural and climatic events. In the structure of the Middle Pleistocene part of the Igetei section, at least 5 levels of soil formation are recorded, called Angara paleosoils. Paleosoils were formed during the change of cryoarid climate of glaciations to semiarid, semihumid, sometimes humid climate of interglacials, during the change of cold semi-deserts, tundra-steppes and tundra of the glacial period to steppe, forest-steppe or taiga landscapes of interglacials. All the studied Middle Pleistocene paleosoils have analogues in the modern soil cover of the region, which indicates the similarity of the landscape and climatic conditions of the Middle Pleistocene interglacials with the Holocene. At the same time, the stratigraphic sequence of paleosoils of the Igetei section allows us to trace the change in such soil formation conditions as climate and vegetation throughout most of the Middle Pleistocene (presumably correlating with MIS 6–13). In the Middle Pleistocene deposits of the Igetei, single artifacts with a weak degree of aeolien corrasion belonging to the pebble-flake industry were found. A comparative analysis of genetically various Middle Pleistocene deposits from different regions convincingly showed that the most informative in terms of natural and climatic reconstructions are subaerial deposits. Among the latter, sections located in Baikal-Yenisei Siberia, where fluctuations in climatic conditions are least dependent on the smoothing influence of seas and oceans, and low heat supply determines a very sensitive reaction of landscapes and soils to fluctuations in temperature and climate humidity. The rare occurrence and poor study of Middle Pleistocene deposits make the Igetei section a reference for Baikal-Yenisei Siberia.
