Spatial and Stratigraphic Structure of the Shaiga‑Redut Settlemen, Primorsky Krai

Abstract
This paper presents a stratigraphic, spatial, and material analysis of the Shaiga-Redut settlement, located on the left bank of the Partizanskaya River (formerly the Suchan River) in the Partizansky District of Primorsky Krai, Russian Far East. The site comprises a square valley-type fortified enclosure (hillfort) and its adjacent territory. Excavations (trenches IV–VI) have revealed a two-phase occupation sequence: the upper layer is attributable to the Poltsevskaya (Smolninskaya) culture, whereas the lower layer – represented by two dwellings – belongs to the Neufeld variant of the Mohe culture. Notably, the lower Mohe occupation is confined exclusively to the area within the fortification walls, whereas the Poltsevskaya materials extend across both the fortified enclosure and its surrounding zone. Radiocarbon dating places the Mohe layer in the 5th century AD. No absolute dating evidence has been recovered from the Poltsevskaya occupation; however, stratigraphic relationships consistently indicate that it postdates the Mohe layer, thereby forming after the 5th century. This finding is of fundamental importance, as it constitutes the first stratigraphically documented evidence that the Poltsevskaya (Smolninskaya) culture persisted in Primorye contemporaneously with – and subsequently to – the Mohe culture during and after the 5th century. Planigraphic and spatial distribution analysis of artefacts further demonstrates that the entire site–including both the fortified interior and the extramural area – functioned as a unified occupational space for the Poltsevskaya (Smolninskaya) population. The principal concentration of Poltsevskaya artefacts (pottery and metal objects) and associated features (economy-related structures) is located outside the fortification; inside the enclosure, Poltsevskaya materials are scarce and limited exclusively to the topsoil and a light grey inter-household horizon. Significantly, the hypothesis that the Shaiga-Redut fortification was constructed by the Mongols during the siege of the Jurchen fortress of Shaygin (associated with the Eastern Xia state, 1215–1234) is not supported by the present evidence.
