Abstract

This article reveals the genre of “everyday” expedition photography of the second half of the 20th century, as a methodological toolkit of the field researches by the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Studying the development trends of the Soviet expeditionary photography on the example of Ilya S. Gurvich visual heritage is important for a wide scientific and public audience in our country, showing an interest to the ethnic cultures of the Northern Siberia and the Far East with the preserved traditional forms of management, as well as the topic of human exploration of the Arctic territories. Special attention is paid to the comparative analysis of the photo-projects plots by Jessup North Pacific Expedition (1897–1902) and Northern expedition of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1956–1991). The experience of the North visualization, realized during the work of these expeditions, is a representative picture of the anthropological research and intellectual searches of Russian scientists throughout the 20th century. These expeditions are characterized by a wide geography of the fieldworks, approbation of the methodology of visual studies using the photo and film techniques. The fixation and collection of the genuine objects of material culture with a sample of typological series of the everyday household items serve as a graphic illustration of the search and transformation processes of research strategies. Pictorial images and contexts reproduction of the northerners “life world” of is becoming an important part of the humanitarian project of Soviet visual anthropology. The corpus of the Ilya S. Gurvich visual heritage is being introduced for the first time into the scientific circulation in line with the problematic field of intellectual culture and visual research. The contribution of Ilya S. Gurvich to the study of the everyday culture of the northeastern Siberia and Far East peoples the was widely recognized by the international scientific community.
